March News from The Napa Sonoma ADU Center

Your ADU four-leaf clover

They say that four-leaf clovers are symbols of faith, hope, love, and luck -- and here at the Napa Sonoma ADU Center we like to think of ourselves as a four-leaf clover for local Napa and Sonoma County homeowners interested in building ADUs.

We have the privilege of speaking with you on a daily basis along every step of your accessory dwelling unit journey, and there is no doubt that these four factors contribute significantly to a successful ADU project.

Building an ADU contains all the complexities of building a whole house -- just usually a bit smaller. Having the gumption to dive into such a project requires FAITH -- in yourself, most of all, to be able to navigate the process with your local planning and building divisions, not to mention other government agencies and your professional team of designers, builders, and more. Napa Sonoma ADU is here to empower homeowners with the knowledge and confidence to know that you have it in you to build an ADU that will meet your short and long-term goals and continue returning on your investment for decades to come. Check out our library of on-demand webinars and blog posts to get started!

Accessory dwelling units projects take on average about 1.5 to 2 years to build (although some prefab projects can be remarkably quicker than that). These long-term ADU projects require HOPE -- an understanding that even when your ADU project encounters an unforeseen obstacle, that fully-finished home with all of your dream finishes, decor, and materials will manifest soon enough. Napa Sonoma ADU is here to inspire you with hope along the way with stories of your neighbors who have successfully built ADUs across Napa and Sonoma Counties.

Register today for our ADU webinar TOMORROW, Thursday, March 17 at 6 pm -- interact live with local housing professionals and homeowners who will share beautiful photos of their completed ADU builds and top tips for small space design. Based out of Healdsburg, this webinar will be useful for homeowners across Napa and Sonoma Counties. (Plus check out our column on ADUs published in collaboration with nonprofit Healdsburg 2040 in the Healdsburg Tribune in advance of the webinar!)

ADUs are also a symbol of LOVE -- whether it’s love for a friend or family member who will be moving into the unit, a community member who needs housing, or for your future self, who might downsize into the unit in order to age in place. Napa Sonoma ADU is here to help you manifest that love through concrete action steps on your ADU project, with helpful tools such as our ADU Calculator Tool, ADU Workbook, catalogue of your Local ADU Rules, and so much more.

Finally, any ADU build project requires just a smidge of good LUCK to make the process flow as smoothly as possible -- and you can maximize your good luck by thinking through your ADU plans in advance thoughtfully. Napa Sonoma ADU is here to maximize your good fortune with our ADU Feasibility Consultations, which entail a prescreening of your parcel, an in-person site visit, and a customized ADU Feasibility Report that helps you start your ADU journey on the best foot possible. Sign up for an ADU Feasibility Consult today!

While you’re here with us, we hope you enjoy our current blog posts, shared below, which highlight our most recent ADU webinars with the cities of Sebastopol and Healdsburg, plus our top tips for folks who are purchasing new property and want to maximize the ADU build potential on their new land.

We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to get to partner with local cities, counties, nonprofits, housing professionals and most of all homeowners in Napa and Sonoma Counties to help build more housing for our community. Thank you for joining us -- and as always, we are here to help you as we transition into “building season” here in the North Bay!

Warmly,

Renée J. Schomp
Director, Napa Sonoma ADU Center

Neighbor Spotlight: Jane and Doug in Mill Valley

"Having an ADU has been wonderful. We help each other – I give them rides and make them cookies, and they help with the cat and the newspapers when we are away. We are very concerned about the affordable housing crisis, and it feels good to know we’ve done a little bit."

On our ADU virtual education for homeowners: “Who knew a topic like accessory dwellings could be so colorful and interesting? I could really sense the wheels turning out there in the Zoom audience. Thanks to [Napa Sonoma ADU], we all learned so much today, and I have a hunch at least a few [of us] are seriously considering the ADU idea.”
